The Leaders

Stewards: Jean Friedman-Rudovsky and Max Resnik

How might we better support journalists in their transition to becoming newsroom leaders? Journalists are trained to report, but as they excel, they are often promoted into roles that require skills in management, finance, strategy, and more.

We want to address the gap in leadership and management training within the industry. Through virtual convenings, we’ll engage current, future and past leaders to explore the types of training, community-building and resources needed at various stages of leadership. We’ll also examine existing programs and conduct research to understand what’s already being done. The goal is to generate recommendations for improving leadership onboarding and offboarding and better supporting the next generation of news industry leaders.

Public call-outs will be made for these types of leaders to participate, give their input, perspective, experience and recommendations.

Looking for contributors who want to:

  • Help plan, craft, and promote the convenings

  • Perform some research in advance of each convening

  • Work to synthesize what’s discussed in the forums into share-outs and recommendations

Time expectations for joining the Leaders working group:

  • Meeting over zoom ~every 3-4 weeks

  • Convening prep and post work - approximately 2-3 hrs per month
